چکیده

Genetic improvement of feed efficiency is key to improve the economic and environmental sustainability fish farming. However, it requires individual phenotypes efficiency, which are difficult if not impossible obtain when reared in tanks or cages. Here, we applied validated on gilthead sea bream a method evaluate based rearing aquariums under restricted feeding. We collected 538 (average weight = 54.50 g). Based these phenotypes, 174.6 g) were groups divergent (high low efficiency), validating that had an impact group at later stage. All fish, their parents as well 794 sibs cages production environment, genotyped 57k SNP array estimate genomic heritability correlations between traits. showed was heritable but did find significant associated QTLs. also negatively genetically correlated viscera yield, indicating most efficient less than least ones. Altogether, results support measuring feeding may be used reliable phenotyping despite bias intrinsically linked rearing.

‘Molecular characterization of a gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) muscle

Understanding the control of piscine fatty acid metabolism is important for determining the nutritional requirements of fish, and hence for the production of optimal aquaculture diets. The regulation and expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1; EC No 2.3.1.21) are critical processes in the control fatty acid metabolism, and here we report a cDNA from gilthead sea bream (Sparus aura...

Genomic selection for feed efficiency traits

Introduction Feed costs comprise the majority of variable expenses in beef cattle systems making feed efficiency an important economic consideration within the beef industry (Koch et al ., 1963; Dickerson et al ., 1974) . Aside from the direct economic impact of this trait complex at the individual producer level, the projections of global population growth provide extra pressure for efficient ...

Genomic Prediction of Resistance to Pasteurellosis in Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) Using 2b-RAD Sequencing

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is a species of paramount importance to the Mediterranean aquaculture industry, with an annual production exceeding 140,000 metric tonnes. Pasteurellosis due to the Gram-negative bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (Phdp) causes significant mortality, especially during larval and juvenile stages, and poses a serious threat to bream production. S...

Metabolic Effects of Insulin and IGFs on Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata) Muscle Cells

Primary cultures of gilthead sea bream myocytes were performed in order to examine the relative metabolic function of insulin compared with IGF-I and IGF-II (insulin-like growth factors, IGFs) at different stages in the cell culture. In these cells, the in vitro effects of insulin and IGFs on 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) and l-alanine uptake were studied in both myocytes (day 4) and small myotubes (da...

Cymothoid parasite Ceratothoa parallela inflicts great losses on cultured gilthead sea bream sparus aurata in Greece.

For the first time Ceratothoa parallela (Otto, 1828), a cymothoid isopod, is reported parasitizing cage-cultured gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata, in Greece. The specimens observed are larvae (Pullus secundus). They were found in the branchial and buccal cavity of young gilthead sea bream of 2 g mean body weight, upon introduction in the cages in an intensive cage farm facility. The species was...
